What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a manual therapy which enhances the body’s own self healing mechanisms to restore the person’s health.

Osteopathy is based on these principles:
  • The body is a unit, you are connect from head to toe, you can’t hurt one part of your body without affect another part of the body.
  • Structure and function are interrelated; if the structure is altered from normal, function will no longer be normal and vice versa.
  • The body has self healing and self regulating mechanism.
Osteopaths help your body heal itself.

Osteopathy began in the 1870’s in Missiouri, U.S.A. as a result of the work of a physician and surgeon, Dr A.T. Still. After three of his children died during a spinal meningitis epidemic, Dr Still question the efficiency of medical treatment, as it was practised in his day. Subsequently he withdrew from practicing as a physician and commenced a period of intense study of anatomy and dissection and clinical observation.

Ten years later, with a much deeper knowledge of human anatomy, physiology and biomechanics, Dr Still began practicing again, only now he used hand on techniques to correct and improve the body’s various structures so that they would function optimally. This new method of diagnosis and treatment Still called “osteopathy”.

For years Dr Still visited patients in their homes travelling far and wide to anyone in need. By the mid 1890’s Dr Still was so renowned for his unique work that he opened the first school of osteopathy.

Today osteopathy is known and practiced in many countries all over the world with over 40,000 osteopaths worldwide. In Australia, 5 year osteopathic courses are available at three universities which involves and three year graduate in Clinical Science and two years of Masters in Osteopathy.
